Offers Tips to Having Better Self Discipline.
Before one can practice self-discipline; they need to be able to define it. The definition of self-discipline is: the act of disciplining or power to discipline one's own feelings, desires, etc., especially with the intention of improving oneself.
Aristotle sums up self-discipline by stating the following historical quote, “We are what we repeatedly do, excellence then is not an act, but a habit.”
To succeed at anything in life, you need undeniable self discipline. The fact that you can come through and do what you need to do at a given time, is crucial to being on top of your game and accomplishing every goal in your path. Here are some tips, from Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas, to help you have better self discipline:
Understand the rules. Regardless of what you do, you need to be aware of the rules. This will allow you can make better decisions on what you will and will not do. Don’t be afraid to educate yourself to help avoid making mistakes in the decision making process.
Practice makes perfect. Self discipline is definitely something that you can teach yourself with practice. It's only by getting up and getting your hands wet that you can start to incorporate discipline within yourself; only then can you truly experience the ups and downs that it takes to become truly self-disciplined. “Strong self discipline and the desire to stay on target is what helps us get back up when we fall on our path”. States; Tracy Lee Thomas, a local martial arts master in Hampton Roads, Virginia.
Get rid of bad habits. Whatever they might be, try to rid your life of habits that can hinder your discipline. In many situations, the only disability one has is a poor attitude.
Set yourself goals. One of the most important aspects of self discipline is having goals. Goals can provide you with the needed drive and motivation to follow through and overcome any obstacle in front of you, thus creating powerful self discipline. Setting long and short term goals will help keep you balanced.
Finish what you start. Always do what you say you will do, and never leave a task unfinished. Not only will this show that you are dependable and a person of your word, but it is a very good way to boost your self-discipline.
Ignore negative influences. As mentioned above about negativity, you cannot let anyone around you take you off your game. You cannot let their words, their peer pressure, or their attitude, affect your discipline and your drive. Stay away from such people, and make your discipline a bigger priority. Try surrounding yourself with “like minded” individuals.
Martial Arts and activities. Martial Arts is a tremendous way to enhance your self- discipline. They provide a situation where you want to do well to accomplish a goal, which can then help you translate that thought process into your real life, thus increasing yourself discipline.
